Styling your session doesn't have to be hard. Here are a few guidelines to make it easier!

Plan Ahead

Make sure you give yourself ample time to find outfits, especially if you're coordinating with a large group. Avoid having everyone match. You'll want everyone to look cohesive by wearing complimentary colors that pull everyone together.  Comfort is key, so make sure your clothes are cozy and relaxed. Keep the weather in mind as well.

Location

Keep your location in mind when choosing outfits. Pick hues that complement the environment. Soft pastels and warm neutrals work well outdoors during the spring and fall. During the winter, jewel tones make the neutral colors in the background pop!

Prep the kids

If there will be kids at your session, a week or so in advance, start preparing them. Let them know they won't be expected to just sit still and smile. Play is a big part of my sessions.  If they know they're going to have fun things will go a lot more smoothly. If needed, a bribe (such as ice cream after the session) is a popular way to keep kids engaged. Getting them involved helps with session day jitters!

1

Start with one item or color you know you want to use. This can be something you already own or something new. Build everyone else's outfits around that item. This simplifies the process whether you're using items you already own or shopping for new ones.

2

Coordinate - don't match - everyone else's outfits. Use colors and tones that are complimentary.  Pick  2 or 3 colors and minimal patterns. Soft pastels and warm neutrals look great any time of year . I love blues and creams, or greens and tans. Both are timeless options. Using multiple shades of the same color looks great, too.

ex: light tan and brown or navy and sky blue

3

Subtly mix in textures, patterns and layers. Accessorize with hats, scarves, vests and headbands. Add in a blanket to complement the environment. Try to work with colors in your surroundings. Avoid bright, neon colors or clothes with distracting patterns or logos.

Get your kids involved! Let them pick their own outfit from 2 or 3 options that would work. Most importantly, be comfortable and stay true to everyone's personalities.
